MUMBAI: Food and Drugs Administration (FDA) inspectors have unearthed an edible oil duplication racket that had taken a number of consumers for a ride. Loose oil was being packaged in a duplicate container tin named after Sundrop Oil, a brand of Agrotech Food Ltd. The duplication was being carried out at Shukla Dal Mill in Goregaon by Bhavesh Chandulal Gala and the mill owner.
The food inspectors were working on a different complaint registered against the mill when they found something fishy with a Sundrop oil tin kept for sale. On questioning, the owner spilled the beans, accusing Gala of owning the tin. The inspectors then nabbed Gala and the mill owner and after further questioning, discovered that they had been duping consumers by selling local oil packaged in branded containers. A case was registered. Vinod Kumar Kaushik of Agrotech Food Ltd said: "We can learn from such incidents and gain experience to protect our consumers. We have decided to change the packaging of Sundrop oil. It will now come with a printed tin sheet, which is impossible to duplicate." and our new seal is also tamperproof," he said.FDA warning* Never buy loose oil.* Insist on a bill.* Purchase should be made from authorised distributors.* Verify the seal and packaging closely. If you have any suspicions, contact the FDA immediately.
